Enel Cuore and Humanitas together in response to the COVID-19 emergency in Bergamo

Enel Cuore, the Fondazione Humanitas per la Ricerca and the Fondazione Insieme con Humanitas have joined forces to support the province of Bergamo, which has been severely affected by the health emergency linked to the spread of COVID-19.

Thanks to a donation, Enel Cuore will be taking part in an innovative project created to tackle the growing need for beds for discharged patients in the Bergamo area. Through this programme, Humanitas is working to identify places like the Winter Garden Hotel in Grassobbio. These can be used to accommodate stabilised and symptom-free COVID-19 patients who have been discharged from hospitals in the province of Bergamo and who, either for social or logistical reasons, are unable to spend the obligatory isolation period in their own homes. This initiative will double the number of beds available, thereby enabling a total of 124 discharged patients to be accommodated.

During their stays, the patients will benefit not only from the care of qualified doctors and nurses, but also from a number of additional services, such as psychological assistance and facilitating contact with the outside world. Furthermore, the donation from Enel Cuore will also be used for purchasing personal protective equipment and oxygen, as well as for deep cleaning work and all of the services necessary for the management of patients affected by COVID-19 in the Humanitas Gavazzeni hospital in Bergamo.

On 21 February, Humanitas Gavazzeni was rapidly converted into a centre dedicated entirely to the treatment of COVID patients,” explains Giuseppe Fraizzoli, CEO and General Manager of Humanitas Gavazzeni. It quickly became apparent that, in addition to treating hundreds of patients on our wards, it was necessary to find solutions to new problems created by the epidemic, namely, managing the recovery of discharged patients who can’t return home and the question of hospital beds. Therefore, with the support of local institutions and organisations, we managed to launch the project to open hotels for discharged patients from throughout the province of Bergamo. Enel Cuore’s support reminds us that we are not alone and that great projects can bring the country together.

The donation is just part of Enel Cuore’s response to help face the coronavirus emergency and to support the main institutions and organisations involved in providing healthcare and social support in the country. The Enel Group’s charitable organisation has in fact granted 23 million euro both to projects that have already been identified and others soon to be selected, thanks to dialogue and continuous coordination with the Civil Protection agency and national and regional authorities. These projects will provide immediate support to activities to respond to the health emergency and to assist hospitals and healthcare structures that are fighting the epidemic all over the country. Furthermore, donations will also be earmarked for Third Sector organisations and local administrations to guarantee the activities currently under way and to support the next phase of recovery.
