“Educate a Child”: UNHCR and Enel Support Learning Programme for Syrian

Enel was the first Italian company to respond to an appeal launched by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon, as part of the UN Global Compact.

The Group has decided to support the UNHCR’s project “EDUCATE A CHILD”, through its non-profit organisation Enel Cuore. The objective of the project is to guarantee access to primary school education for refugee and displaced children in Syria, between 2015 and 2018.

The programme focuses on five main areas of action:

  • Direct economic support for the neediest families to cover their children’s annual school costs
  • Counselling and educational guidance services
  • Courses to recover lost school years
  • Teacher training
  • Restoration of school buildings

Thanks to “Educate a Child”, during the 2012 – 2013 school year, 9,164 refugee children in Syria without access to the school system, were given the opportunity to attend school thanks to “Educate a Child”.

The UNHCR’s objective is to continue to guarantee access to education for these 9,164 children, while expanding the programme to an additional 200,000 displaced children in Syria from 2015 to 2018.

Education is one of Enel’s key objectives in Italy. Patrizia Grieco, Chairman of Enel and Enel Cuore (from May 2014 to May 2020), recently presented “Fare Scuola”, a project by Enel Cuore that will involve a series of educational and structural initiatives in 60 pre-schools and primary schools across Italy for a period of three years.

In addition to these projects, Enel supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which CEO Francesco Starace highlighted at the Global Compact last September.
