During the 2020 health emergency, the elderly were among the most vulnerable people, not only because of the risks of infection, but also because of social isolation and daily difficulties. In response to these needs, we decided to support the expansion of home-based service, part of the “Viva gli Anziani” program, which offers concrete help to make daily life easier and safer. The initiative is active in nine Italian cities, where a team of volunteers provides food support, home care and companionship, preventing the elderly from being forced out of their homes. The Comunità di Sant'Egidio Acap Onlus has always been committed to supporting people in need, especially the elderly and vulnerable. With the “Viva gli Anziani” program, the association has put in place a network of solidarity that provides daily assistance to the elderly, with special attention to the needs created by the health emergency. Through this initiative, the Community of Sant'Egidio offers concrete help, creating a network of support between citizens and the most fragile people. Our contribution made it possible to enhance home services in the cities of Brindisi, Catania, Fiumicino, Ferentino, Rome, Novara, Genoa, Sassari, and Civitavecchia. Services include delivery of basic necessities, home care and companionship, with the aim of combating isolation and ensuring that the elderly have support to carry out daily activities. The project is a key aid in protecting the health and well-being of the elderly, reducing the risk of exposure to infection and improving their quality of life.
