The 2020 health emergency has put a strain on the Italian health care system, requiring rapid and targeted interventions to increase care capacity in the most affected areas. In Puglia, the implementation of new facilities and equipment was necessary to meet the needs related to the management of Covid-19 patients, both in the critical and post-acute phases. To meet this challenge, we have committed to support the setting up of additional intensive care beds, the creation of dedicated observation rooms, and the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE), which is essential to ensure the safety of healthcare workers. The Puglia Region, through its governing bodies and local health facilities, coordinated interventions to cope with the pandemic emergency, implementing initiatives aimed at strengthening available resources and ensuring an effective and timely response. Our intervention contributed to the creation of 230 new intensive care beds at health facilities in the territory, complete with state-of-the-art electromedical equipment. Among them, 8 places were set up at the Perino Hospital in Brindisi, for an investment of €200,000. In parallel, we supported the setting up of observation rooms for post-acute phase Covid-19 patients, necessary for recovery and management of the consequences of the disease. The initiative also included the monthly procurement of about 300,000 pieces of personal protective equipment, including masks, coveralls and gloves, and the provision of at least 2 Covid-19 ambulances, which are essential for the safe management of patients in emergencies. These interventions were an important step in strengthening the Puglia Region's healthcare response capacity, protecting medical personnel and improving the care provided to patients.
