Multiple sclerosis is one of the most widespread and serious chronic neurological diseases. It is an autoimmune condition that, in Italy alone, affects approximately 3,600 people each year, 50% of whom are under the age of 40 and predominantly female. The most common symptoms include visual impairment, fatigue, difficulty walking, loss of strength and sensory disorders. These conditions have a profound impact on daily life and often make it difficult to reach workplaces, healthcare facilities, treatment and rehabilitation centres, or places for social interaction — also due to the inadequacy of public transport services. We believe that the freedom to move should be a right for everyone. For this reason, we have chosen to support those who cannot do so independently by backing the project “Moving Freely: the Right to Mobility as a Driver of Inclusion and Social Participation”, promoted by AISM – the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association. Founded in Genoa in 1968, AISM protects and represents people with multiple sclerosis, their families and caregivers nationwide, through 98 provincial branches, 290 rehabilitation service professionals and more than 14,000 volunteers active in social and assistance centres. Overall, the initiative provides — in the regions of Campania, Basilicata, Puglia and Calabria — the activation of a free transport service dedicated to people with multiple sclerosis and related conditions, managed by AISM volunteers using vehicles made available by the Association. The project includes the purchase of a wheelchair-accessible vehicle equipped with a lift for the Bari branch, as well as the coverage, for one year, of the operational costs of the mobility service in the four aforementioned regions (fuel, maintenance, insurance and depreciation), with the goal of reaching approximately 1,300 people. Specifically, within the framework of the project, Enel Cuore’s contribution will enable AISM to purchase the vehicle for the Bari branch and cover, for one year, transport expenses in Calabria and Basilicata, benefiting approximately 350 people. Because while a chronic illness may slow a person down, the least we can do is help ensure they never have to stop.
