Growing up without solid points of reference can be difficult. For many teenagers facing challenging circumstances, there is a risk of dropping out of school, becoming isolated, or losing confidence in their abilities. Providing concrete opportunities for growth means taking action before these difficulties lead to exclusion. It is with this goal in mind that we decided to support the project “Il Mestiere di Crescere” (The Art of Growing Up), promoted by the In-Presa Social Cooperative, an organization based in Carate Brianza that accompanies boys and girls aged 13 to 19 on their educational journey, helping them discover their talents, aptitudes, and aspirations. Accredited as a vocational training provider by the Lombardy Region, the Cooperative works with 20 municipalities in the area and relies on a team of 74 employees and approximately 100 volunteers. Over the years, this commitment has fostered a partnership with over 300 local businesses, which participate in workplace-based learning programs and facilitate the integration of training with the real world of work. “The Art of Growing Up” is specifically aimed at young people facing complex circumstances: relationship difficulties with adults and peers, separation from their biological families and placement in foster care, probation for crimes committed, or intellectual disabilities. The project will run for three years and aims to support approximately 60 young people, helping them re-enter an educational pathway through workshops and career guidance initiatives. These will be complemented by the opportunity to participate in internships at local businesses, allowing them to test their skills directly in a professional setting. Each program will last an average of one year and can begin at any time, allowing for a timely response to emerging needs. Professional educators and instructors will guide the young people step by step, working not only on technical skills but also on soft skills such as independence, responsibility, and collaboration, qualities that make a difference in daily life and in the workplace. In particular, In-Presa offers young people access to and the opportunity to participate in: a vocational training center offering three-year programs in the hospitality, electronics, and mechanical sectors; a study support center to help students earn their middle school diploma and participate in work-study programs; an educational and career guidance center offering workshops in tailoring, cooking, upholstery, carpentry, and an educational garden, as well as an electrical workshop, for adolescents at risk of social isolation and delinquency, those with psychological distress, and those with disabilities. Through our support for the In-Presa project, we aim to offer these young people not only practical skills and a real-world setting in which to learn a trade, but also the opportunity to build their self-confidence and rediscover the joy of taking risks. Because guiding young people on their journey of growth means teaching them to look to the future. And those who look to the future learn to imagine a different future, a future that is possible.
