For a woman who has experienced domestic violence, starting over means much more than finding a safe place. It means rebuilding her independence, regaining confidence in her abilities, and envisioning a different future for herself and her children. To make this possible, she needs dedicated support, safe spaces, and tangible opportunities for social and professional inclusion. This is why we decided to support the “Cascina Ri-Nascita” project, promoted by SVS Donna Aiuta Donna Cooperativa Sociale. The initiative aims to transform a historic farmhouse in Milan’s Parco Sud into a welcoming residential and training center for women with children under 18 who are leaving situations of domestic violence, giving them a fresh start. SVS Donna Aiuta Donna Cooperativa Sociale is an anti-violence center recognized by the Lombardy Region and part of the City of Milan’s Anti-Violence Network. It provides women who have experienced violence with free support services, legal assistance, and pathways to employment. Since 2024, it has also managed two shelters at confidential locations dedicated to protecting women and their children. The Cascina Ri-Nascita project was created to expand this commitment through the redevelopment of Cascina Carpana, a historic building in Milan’s Parco Sud. The City of Milan assigned the property to the cooperative through a 2021 public call for proposals focused on restoring the site. Once renovation is complete, the farmhouse will become an open and inclusive space. It will include: 10 housing units providing temporary accommodation for women and their children under 18; a teaching restaurant, a café-bistro, and vocational training workshops in restoration, embroidery, and tailoring; an equestrian center for horseback riding and rehabilitation activities for people with disabilities; green spaces for recreational and cultural activities for young people at risk of social exclusion. Our contribution will support the structural work needed to create the café-bistro, which will offer an important training and employment opportunity for women supported by the cooperative on their path to independence. Through hands-on work experience, participants will be able to develop new skills, strengthen their financial independence, and build new prospects for their lives. We firmly believe that giving women the tools they need to rebuild their independence helps break the cycle of violence and creates new opportunities for growth, well-being, and inclusion for them, their children, and the entire community.
