Undergoing cancer treatment often means having to travel regularly to hospitals and healthcare facilities for appointments, checkups, and therapies. For people who live alone, face financial hardship, or are in fragile physical or psychological conditions, even these journeys can become an obstacle to continuity of care. In these situations, having access to free and safe transportation is not only a practical form of support, but also a tangible sign of care and closeness. Since 1979, LILT – Lega Italiana Lotta Tumori - Venice has worked in cancer prevention, rehabilitation, and awareness, while also providing assistance to people with cancer and their families. Through its clinics, the association carries out breast, dermatological, and urological cancer prevention activities and, since 2014, has also provided a free transportation service managed by its volunteers. People are accompanied from their homes to hospitals throughout the Veneto region and, in some cases, to healthcare facilities in neighboring regions, and are then driven home after their appointments or treatments. In 2025, the service completed 1,416 trips, providing 2,044 rides and covering more than 144,000 kilometers. The “Pulmino Amico” project aims to renew part of the fleet used every day to take patients to medical appointments and treatments. The eight vehicles currently available travel an average of approximately 480 kilometers a day, and some have already exceeded 300,000 kilometers. Replacing the most heavily used vehicles is therefore essential to ensure safe and comfortable journeys for both passengers and the volunteers who accompany them. Our contribution will enable LILT Venice to purchase one nine-seat van and three cars, helping ensure the continuity of a service that, for many people, provides tangible support during particularly vulnerable moments. In this way, every journey also becomes an opportunity for human connection, listening, and support.
