Turning 18 does not necessarily mean being ready to face all the responsibilities of adult life on your own. For young people who reach adulthood after living in residential care, foster care or other forms of supported accommodation, finding a home can be one of the most difficult challenges to overcome. With this in mind, we chose to support the “La Ca(u)sa Giusta – Supported housing for young adults” project, promoted by Il Tetto Casal Fattoria Cooperativa Sociale. The project involves renovating and furnishing an apartment confiscated from organized crime in Rome’s Municipio VI, in the Tor Vergata neighborhood. Since 1984, Il Tetto Casal Fattoria Cooperativa Sociale has worked to address hardship among children and young people through educational residential care programs. Today, it supports nearly 100 children and young people experiencing family and social difficulties, accompanying them through pathways designed around their individual needs. The new apartment will provide a tangible response to the housing challenges faced by young people leaving care in Rome. It will accommodate 6–8 young adults between the ages of 18 and 21 who are leaving residential care, foster care or other supported accommodation, referred by local social services and by professionals from the educational and residential facilities they are leaving. The apartment will therefore be more than simply a place to live. It will be the starting point for a supported housing program designed to accompany young people through the delicate transition to adult life. Renovating and furnishing the apartment will transform a property confiscated from organized crime into a space dedicated to growth and independence. Our contribution will cover the renovation and furnishing costs of the apartment. A tangible way to ensure continuity for support pathways already underway and to offer young adults a safe space from which they can build their independence, step by step.
