Returning to life outside prison means facing a complex transition that involves not only work, but also relationships, family and one’s connection with the community. We chose to support the “Di Nuovo Cittadini 2.0” project, promoted by Fondazione Progetto Mirasole Ente Terzo Settore, as a continuation and expansion of an initial pilot edition carried out in 2022. The initiative aims to implement measures designed to support the employment reintegration of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, in collaboration with the justice system of the Milan Metropolitan Area and the Provinces of Monza Brianza and Lodi. Fondazione Progetto Mirasole Ente Terzo Settore was established in 2016 to manage and bring new life to Mirasole Abbey, a remarkable monumental complex owned by Policlinico Cà Granda and protected by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Metropolitan City of Milan, through social initiatives capable of generating positive change in the local area. Located in Opera, near the prison of the same name, on the southern outskirts of Milan, the complex is now not only a site of cultural value, but also a productive hub thanks to the activities developed within it. The project works across several areas: Training and employment inclusion, through guidance and tutoring activities, qualifying vocational training programs and internships aimed at employment, both inside and outside prison, in the restaurant and food service sectors. Strengthening social and community ties, by supporting beneficiaries in the transition from incarceration to active citizenship and helping them rebuild a positive relationship with the wider community. Rebuilding and supporting family relationships, through a process of return and reconnection with society as part of a pathway of readjustment that may involve significant challenges. Over the project’s 12-month duration, 80 people subject to criminal justice measures at the Opera, Bollate, Monza and Lodi correctional facilities and under the supervision of the Milan-Lodi Office for External Penal Enforcement will be involved, together with 30 family members in activities focused on social and family relationships. The project also plans to involve 10 new companies, which will be supported in welcoming incarcerated people through work placements and/or direct employment. Our contribution will support part of the personnel costs and work placement grants needed to carry out the project. It is support for a pathway that brings together training, employment and relationships to accompany people in the transition from incarceration to renewed participation in community life.
