In a social context marked by growing inequalities, there are still too many people living in extremely fragile conditions. Homelessness, isolation, violence, illness, or addiction can disrupt life trajectories and leave behind those who lack the tools to get back on their feet. In many Italian cities, the need for shelter, listening, and inclusion is becoming increasingly urgent, especially for those who have no network to rely on. It is in this scenario that experiences capable of restoring dignity and hope are born, transforming solidarity into concrete action, such as that of the Locanda del Samaritano, a volunteer organization that for 15 years has been opening its doors to those living on the margins. In premises provided free of charge by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent, the Locanda welcomes and accompanies vulnerable people, offering not only a roof over their heads, but above all dignity, a listening ear, and the possibility of a new beginning. Today, with the project we support, “Il locandiere – Casa per ferie nel centro di Catania” (The Innkeeper – Holiday Home in the Center of Catania), we are taking a step further, creating a solidarity-based bed and breakfast, a place of welcome in the historic center, where solidarity becomes a concrete opportunity for work and inclusion. The project transforms a 600 square meter space into a real “holiday home” with 15 rooms and 30 beds. Thanks to training and job placement, every year between 5 and 10 people welcomed into the Locanda del Samaritano will find stable employment within the B&B. Management will be entrusted to 5 employees divided into shifts, chosen from among the guests themselves: men and women who, through work, regain an active role in society. The holiday home will be open to families with limited resources, relatives of hospitalised patients and visitors with special needs: it is estimated that it will welcome between 5,000 and 6,000 guests each year. An accessible, simple, authentic place, where hospitality is not just a service, but a warm embrace. With this project, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting those who care for others, creating networks of hope and possibility. Because every person has the right to a future, and together we can build it.
