Dealing with cancer means not only fighting physical pain, but also living with fear, loneliness, and uncertainty. Everyone has the right to timely treatment and human support at every stage of the disease, if possible directly in the homes of the most fragile patients. Founded in 1991, the Association of Volunteers Assisting Cancer Patients (AVAPO) in Mestre works to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and their families. In agreement with the ULSS 3 Serenissima Health Authority, it offers free palliative care, guidance, psychological support, accompaniment, nutritional advice, and other essential services. In 2024 alone, AVAPO assisted 730 people, demonstrating how vital its commitment is to the local area. In Veneto, only 57% of patients who need palliative care are able to access it, often only in the terminal stages of their illness. Those most disadvantaged are patients who are alone or have fragile family networks. To fill this gap, AVAPO has launched the “Mi Prendo Cura di Te” (I Take Care of You) project, which we have decided to support. It offers early, qualified home care at the request of individuals, social services, ULSS 3 Serenissima, and hospitals in the areas of Mestre, Dolo, Mirano, and Padua (for pediatric patients). The project involves: the employment of two nurses to provide home care and treatment; the support of one psychologist and one nutritionist to accompany patients and families through the various stages of the disease; the purchase of medical aids to meet the specific needs of those receiving care; the training of volunteers and caregivers. Our contribution will cover the costs of the two nurses for one year, in addition to psychological and nutritional consultations, thus ensuring comprehensive and integrated care.
