Finding your way around a large hospital is never easy. For those who are frail, or who arrive with worries or difficulties, moving between wards and corridors can become an obstacle that increases their sense of disorientation. Making routes clearer and more accessible means alleviating anxiety and restoring autonomy. The Niguarda Hospital Foundation was established in 2022 to support, develop, and promote the clinical, care, training, and research activities of the Niguarda ASST. The Niguarda Hospital in Milan is one of the largest healthcare complexes in Italy: 18 pavilions, over 1,000 beds, 5,000 professionals, and more than one million patients treated each year. A place of care that is also a small city, serving not only Milan but the entire national and international community. Together, we support the “Wayfinding Niguarda: sustainable and inclusive mobility” project, which aims to improve orientation and mobility within the hospital, making access to spaces easier and more equitable for everyone. The project includes: a new system of horizontal and vertical signage, clear and intuitive, designed with particular attention to people with motor, sensory, and cognitive disabilities; two electric shuttles, each with nine seats, equipped to transport people with disabilities, to facilitate movement between the pavilions, improving the autonomy of patients and their companions while helping to reduce emissions and improve air quality. This intervention is not only a response to daily needs, but takes on even greater strategic value in view of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, when Niguarda Hospital will be one of the main healthcare facilities for athletes, delegations, and visitors from all over the world. Preparing for this event means ensuring hospitality and inclusion at an international level.
